PLX4032 (also known as RG7204) is a melanoma drug that is said to be very successful in the treatment of malignant melanoma. Like all cancer treatments, this should not be seen as a “cure” for melanoma or any other cancer, but the drug does show promise in targeting malignant melanoma that has metastasized. Clinical trials have shown that tumors have shrunk and in a couple of cases disappeared completely.
What is different about PLX4032 is that some scientists describe this treatment course as the “penicillin moment” and the hope is that genomic cancer treatments can improve cancer survival rates and also use gene sequencing to tailor customized versions of the drug to treat specific mutations of the cancer, on top of mapping potential mutations for further drug development. There are certain side effects of PLX4032 to be noted, none of which, at this time, are said to be catastrophic, and the worst of which are said to be small skin tumors which can be removed.
